What’s the difference?

coconut oil

Being great for many things from cooking with to nourishing skin and hair, many people have jumped on the coconut oil hype and are enjoying the results, however on the other hand some of you haven’t had very good experiences, this post may explain why.

Many oils on the market are marketed as ‘pure’ leading you to believe that what you’re buying is the proper stuff but it’s not the lable that’s been designed to attract you to buy the product that matters, it’s the ingredients. Take the coconut oils above for example, it’s always best to get Organic Virgin or 100% Virgin coconut oil that is cold pressed and unrefined as opposed to those that just say ‘pure’ as the ‘pure’ ones have had all the good nutrients taken out of them during the process of taking it from the coconut and putting the oil into a jar, leaving you with literally ‘pure’ coconut oil and little nutrients.

Hair grease is another example, when I tell people that I use coconut oil on my hair some immediate reactions are “ohhh yeah like palmers coconut oil” nah, like the coconut oil that you cook with. Greases are a mix of synthetic ingredients that clog follicles and pores such as liquid paraffin (mineral oil), petroleum/petrolatum and then some natural oils (how pure they are I don’t know) and other stuff mixed together. Basically imagine vaseline with some other stuff mixed into it and then marketed to you as a hair product that will help you to achieve long hair.

As a lot of us are trying to “grow long hair” this is an easy thing to state to get people intereted in your product and then make money, hence why I always say read the ingredients not the lable. Further more growing long hair has more to do with how you care for your hair in terms of manipulation and styling, although the right products can help by keeping it moisturised and so preventing breakage.

Benefits of Organic Virgin Coconut Oil for beauty are:

  • Hot oil hair mask / conditioner
  • Moisturising skin lotion
  • Natural lip balm
  • Under eye cream
  • Reduces the appearance of stretch marks
  • Makeup remover
  • Mix with sea salt or brown sugar for a natural body scrub.
  • Shaving cream/after shave
  • It’s good for dry skin or scalp, dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, athletes foot and fungal infections due to the natural anti-fungal and anti- inflammatory properties.
  • Naturally calms diaper rash, cradle cap, chicken pox/shingles and bee stings or bug bites.
  • Helps to heal burns, cuts and scrapes.
  • Make your own natural deodorant with coconut oil and recipes online.
  • Some people opt to use coconut oil as a natural toothpaste for it’s natural antibacterial properties and ability to whiten teeth.

…And many more. Coconut oil also has many natural health benefits that I guarantee you’ll be surprised about.

Organic Virgin Coconut Oil is always best but as I struggle to find it for a decent price, I use my 100% virgin coconut oil (cold pressed and unrefined) on my skin daily after showering to lock in the moisture as just like greases, many creams and lotions also contain cheap, synthetic ingredients. I also use my 100% virgin coconut oil as a pree poo before I wash my hair to treat my flaky scalp and as a part of my L.O.C Method to keep my hair moisturised and prevent breakage.
